Good ideas, knife blade is on my list of things to try. I can't find the link right now, but there was also the project complete with schematics (and IIRC based on Arduino) for spark erosion cutting of thin metal.

How about a swiveling knife blade, like an X-acto blade, to cut out paper, card stock, and vinyl? That's essentially what the sign shops use to make vinyl lettering to put on vehicles, store windows, etc. I'm sure the scrapbookers would love it too.

How about a nibbler? You could cut shapes from sheet metal then.

Of course a laser, if you could afford one.

A star wheel, to punch lines of holes in paper for templates. Lay your punched paper against a surface, then pounce some fine powder over the holes to leave your pattern on the surface.

A scriber, to scratch layout lines in metal parts for milling on more powerful machines.

A plasma torch! To cut parts from sheet metal or plate.

A MIG welder head, for automated welding. Limited application perhaps, but possibly useful.

That should get you started! :-)
Justin

This is a ad-hoc un-official thread to toss "neat" hardware designs / tools / equipment in. I will start it out.

1/8" Mini-Drilling Head
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=47869
